And this scientist goes on: "In all humility, it must...be admitted that it is impossible to categorically deny that we may have reached a point where we must abandon the faith that [in all cases] knowledge is better than ignorance. We simply lack the ability to make accurate prediction."
In last sentence, "simply" most nearly means
(A) foolishly
(B) directly
(C) easily
(D) basically
(E) innocently
Simply, we lack the abolity to~
The simple fact/reason is that we lack the ability to~
I am a painter. I paint portraits and townscapes..... Unhappily, it is not productive in the crude sense.
Q. In last sentence, "Unhappily" most nearly means
(A) Inappropriately
(B) Mournfully
(C) Awkwardly
(E) Unexpectedly
Sasha
Such adaptive myopia is necessary in science because the grinding, repetitive minuteness of daily laboratory work is so time- consuming (for weeks, months, even years at a time) that, often, even to remember the original impetus for the work is a psychological trick of the highest order.
In last sentence, “trick” most nearly means
(A) ruse (B) feat (C) prank (D) illusion (E) peculiarity
Sasha
trick
a way of doing sth that works well; a good method
feat
an action or piece of work that needs skill, strength or courage
而这是a psychological trick of the highest order.
Even our grammar makes the terms of this relationship perfectly clear: I choose the plants, I pull the weeds, I harvest the crops. We divide the world into subjects and objects, and here in the garden...we humans are the subjects. ...A bumblebee could also regard itself as a subject in the garden, and the bloom it's plundering for its drop of nectar as an object.
in the last sentence, "subject" most nearly means
(A) topic
(B) motive
(C) citizen
(D) agent
(E) recipient
